What's so special about a Sweet 16?

I have always wondered, what is so special about a girl turning 16?. Why is it that their 16th birthday has to be the high end one? I have seen that show on MTV called 'super sweet 16' and it always leaves me in shock because of all the money the parents spend on a birthday party. Sure, you may say that those are celebrity parents and they have the money, but it also applies to common folk also. I know plenty of people who have had sixteenth birthday parties and their parents literally spend thousands of dollars on it. Aside from the money, why is it at age sixteen? why not eighteen? sixteen is the most random number to have a crazy birthday on.

  1. 16 is significant because in olden days it was the coming of age year for women, however with the advent of age restrictions and such 18 is now the coming of age.. or 21 in countries/states where you cannot drink till 21.. I know its still tradition to give the keys to the house on your 21'st birthday, but most kids have house keys before this point and so now they get a novelty key, this was to say you are an adult of this house and may come and go as you please. Of course women have always had the younger coming of age because most men have a thing for younger women and so in olden days used to aim to date someone younger than them hence 18/16 thing.

  9. It's actually the age of majority in lots of places. Plus it's an excuse to party. Don't know if it was actually a big thing before that MTV show started.

  12. i just had a conversation about this the other day with someone. my neice got a 370z for her 16th birthday. like wtf?! when i turned 16 i had a few friends over and we ate pizza and played games. when i turned 18 i bought a truck MYSELF WITH MY OWN MONEY and then when i turned 21 i actually had a party. doesnt make sense to spend that much money on anything so trivial. i thought i was bad when i had a $60 bar tab for my 21st.
